Barnstable County Correctional Facility Overview
Barnstable County Correctional Facility is operated by the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office at 6000 Sheriff's Place in Bourne, Massachusetts. It appears in this Essex County facility set for one specific reason: the official ECSD female-inmates page states that Essex County female pretrial and sentenced inmates formerly held at Suffolk County House of Correction are now housed at Barnstable County Correctional Facility. To locate an inmate under that notice, ECSD directs callers to Barnstable County Sheriff's Office at 508-563-4300.
This page should not imply that Barnstable is an Essex County facility or that it is located near Middleton, Lawrence, or Salisbury. It is a regional serving facility for the female-inmate route described by ECSD. Essex arrest, court, bail, and public-records questions can still involve ECSD, Essex courts, local police, or the Essex District Attorney. Physical custody, mail, and canteen for the routed female inmate may involve Barnstable-specific instructions.
The official Essex female-inmates page is the source for this out-of-county routing.
The screenshot is intentionally used here because it documents why Barnstable belongs in an Essex custody lookup workflow even though it sits in Bourne.
Barnstable Role and Essex Female Population
The project research did not treat Barnstable's full facility capacity as an Essex physical-facility statistic. Instead, it used Barnstable as the current serving facility for Essex female inmates under the ECSD female-inmates notice. The strongest Essex-specific statistic is from ECSD's 2024 Annual Report, which listed 75 ECSD female inmates held at Barnstable. That number is useful for understanding the custody relationship, but it is not a live count.
For comparison, the Women in Transition Center in Salisbury had a 2024 ADP of 17, including three on electronic monitoring, and a 2025 operational capacity of 24 beds. That contrast is why the WIT page must not be written as if every Essex female inmate is in Salisbury. Barnstable handles the current female pretrial and sentenced routing described by ECSD, while WIT remains a minimum-security and pre-release women's facility.
How to Look Up an Essex Female Inmate at Barnstable
For female Essex pretrial and sentenced inmates, the ECSD female-inmates page directs people to call Barnstable County Sheriff's Office at 508-563-4300. Official sources reviewed did not locate a public Essex online jail roster, and the Barnstable route should not be replaced with generic roster-search advice. Use the phone number, prepare identifiers, and be ready to separate custody location from the Essex criminal case or arresting agency.
- Call Barnstable County Sheriff's Office at 508-563-4300 to ask whether the woman is housed there under the Essex route.
- Prepare full legal name, date of birth, approximate arrest or commitment date, Essex court if known, and arresting agency.
- If bail amount or Essex sheriff records are needed, call ECSD Records at 978-750-1900 ext. 3400 or use the ECSD public-records process.
- If the person has been sentenced to state prison, check Massachusetts VINELink instead of assuming county custody.
- If federal or immigration custody is suspected, use the BOP locator or ICE ODLS.
| Question | Official Route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Is an Essex female inmate housed at Barnstable? | 508-563-4300 | ECSD female-inmates page gives this locator phone. |
| What is the bail amount? | ECSD Records ext. 3400 | Bail remains tied to the Essex sheriff/court process. |
| Can I request booking records? | ECSD PIO/RAO Gretchen Grosky | Use ggrosky@essexsheriffma.org for nonurgent Essex public records. |
| Did the person move to state prison? | Massachusetts VINELink | DOC custody is separate from county custody. |
Barnstable Address and Contact
Use the Barnstable address for the serving facility in Bourne and the ECSD public-records contact for Essex sheriff records. A person can be physically housed at Barnstable while the arrest, docket, bail, prosecution, or public-records custodian remains connected to Essex County. That is the central practical distinction.

Visiting Someone at Barnstable
The Essex research file documents the Barnstable phone route, mail route, and canteen instructions from ECSD's female-inmates page. It does not provide a complete Barnstable visitation schedule table for Essex female inmates. Because Barnstable is operated by a different sheriff's office and is physically outside Essex County, visitors should call 508-563-4300 before traveling to confirm current visit approval, visitor forms, schedule, identification requirements, dress code, and whether the person is eligible for visits.
Do not apply Middleton, Lawrence, or Salisbury visit rules automatically to Barnstable. ECSD visit rules are useful for ECSD facilities, but Barnstable custody is a different facility system. If the question is "where is the person?" call Barnstable first. If the question is "what happened in the Essex case?" use the Essex court, ECSD Records, or public-records route.
| Visit Item | Barnstable Page Guidance | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule | Call 508-563-4300 | No Barnstable schedule was documented in the Essex research file. |
| Identification | Confirm before travel | Do not assume ECSD facility rules control Barnstable visits. |
| Facility location | Bourne, Massachusetts | It is outside Essex County. |
| Custody confirmation | Call before visiting | Routing may change with release, transfer, or DOC placement. |
Mail, Canteen, and Money for Barnstable
Barnstable instructions are different from Essex ConnectNetwork instructions. ECSD's female-inmates page lists mail for routed female inmates as inmate name and ID number, care of Securus Digital Mail Center - Barnstable, PO Box 25555, Tampa, FL 33622. That is not the Essex Securus Digital Mail Center/Essex County address, and it is not the physical Bourne facility address.
Canteen uses Access Corrections at 1-866-345-1884, a lobby kiosk at BCCF from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. seven days per week, or a bank check or money order mailed to Barnstable County Sheriff's Office, Attn: Inmate Accounts, 6000 Sheriff's Place, Bourne, MA 02532. ECSD's female-inmates page says no cash or personal checks, and the money order should be payable to the inmate name and ID number.

Essex Records Versus Barnstable Custody
A Barnstable housing location does not move every record into Barnstable's custody. The arrest report may belong to a local Essex police department. The court docket may belong to an Essex District Court or Essex Superior Court clerk. The prosecution file may involve the Essex District Attorney. Essex sheriff booking or release records may be requested from ECSD if they are within ECSD custody and not exempt. Barnstable may control housing, visit, canteen, and facility-specific custody information while the Essex case remains an Essex case.
For a nonurgent Essex sheriff records request, provide a reasonable description: full name, date of birth, approximate arrest or custody date, female-inmate Barnstable routing if known, and the specific record sought, such as nonexempt booking sheet, custody commitment, release record, booking photograph, or bail/release information. Massachusetts Public Records Law can require access to public records, but exemptions for privacy, investigatory material, CORI, safety, sealing, or other restrictions may limit what is released.
About Barnstable in the Essex Lookup Path
Barnstable's inclusion is narrow and practical. It prevents a common search failure: looking only at Middleton or Women in Transition when ECSD's own notice routes current female pretrial and sentenced custody to Barnstable. It also prevents a second mistake, which is sending Essex ConnectNetwork deposits or Essex Securus mail instructions to a Barnstable-housed inmate. The correct Barnstable mail address, Access Corrections phone, kiosk hours, and money-order rules should be used when the person is housed there.
If a search still fails, check the custody level. A woman may have been released, moved to a Massachusetts DOC prison after sentence, transferred under a federal matter, held in immigration custody, or connected to records held by a court or police department rather than a sheriff. VINELink is the Massachusetts DOC path, BOP covers federal sentenced custody, and ICE ODLS covers immigration detention. None of those systems replaces the Barnstable phone route for the ECSD female-inmate notice.
Note: Confirm Barnstable custody by phone before mailing funds or traveling, and use Essex records channels only for Essex sheriff records.
