No Essex County Online Roster
Official Essex County Sheriff's Department pages reviewed for this build did not locate a public jail roster, recent-bookings page, released-inmates search, or booking-number lookup. That means Essex County inmate records cannot be handled like a county with a live public roster. The most useful official chain is ECSD phone, Records for bail amount, Barnstable for female Essex inmates, a targeted public-records request, MassCourts for case events, VINELink for state-prison custody, BOP for federal custody, and ICE ODLS for immigration custody.
The main sheriff number is 978-750-1900. The official ECSD bail page tells callers seeking a bail amount to call Records at 978-750-1900 ext. 3400. That extension should be treated as the bail-amount records route, not as a guaranteed public roster desk. For nonurgent records, the sheriff's public-records request page names Public Information Officer Gretchen Grosky at 978-750-1900 ext. 3361 and ggrosky@essexsheriffma.org.
Search reality: Official sources reviewed did not locate a public Essex County jail roster, so start with ECSD phone channels and use written records requests for nonurgent documents.
Use Essex County Inmate Records
Because no official roster form was found, the practical "search form" is the set of details a caller or requester can give to the right office. Exact identity details matter. A same-name search can be wrong, and a person may have moved from Middleton to court, DOC, Barnstable, BOP, ICE, or release. If the arrest is recent, phone comes before paperwork because a public-records request is not built for immediate status checks.
- Prepare the full legal name, aliases, date of birth, arrest date, arresting agency, and likely court.
- Call ECSD at 978-750-1900 for current male county custody or Middleton routing.
- Call Records at ext. 3400 when the immediate question is the bail amount listed by ECSD.
- For female Essex inmates, call Barnstable County Sheriff's Office at 508-563-4300.
- For old records, send a targeted public-records request to Gretchen Grosky and ask for electronic format if available.
- If the person was arraigned, search MassCourts or contact the clerk where the case was filed.
Essex County Roster Fields
No public ECSD roster fields were available to inspect. A page that says Essex has a searchable sheriff roster by booking number, housing unit, or charge is not using the official-source findings in the research file. The safe table for Essex is a channel table: what exists, what does not, and what information helps the official office answer.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official Essex online jail roster | Not located | n/a | No official public roster or search form was found on reviewed ECSD pages. |
| Phone lookup details | Spoken identifiers | Practical | Full name, DOB, booking or arrest date, facility, court, and arresting agency. |
| Public-records description | Free text | Yes, practical | ECSD asks requesters to provide a reasonable description and preferred electronic format. |
| VINELink state search | Name or commitment number | Yes for DOC lookup | Use for Massachusetts state-prison custody, not as an ECSD roster replacement. |
Essex County Inmate Record Fields
A public Essex roster profile could not be inspected because no official roster was located. Still, ECSD phone staff or a records response may confirm or produce nonexempt custody facts, depending on law, redactions, and the office that holds the record. Formal charges should be verified with court records because booking labels can differ from the complaint or indictment filed after arrest.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Mugshot | Not publicly inspectable online because no official Essex roster or gallery was found. |
| Booking number | May exist in jail systems and may be useful for mail or deposits once known. |
| Name and DOB | Used to distinguish people with similar names in phone or written requests. |
| Charges | Jail labels are not final court charges. Check MassCourts and the clerk. |
| Bail | ECSD names Records ext. 3400 for bail amount questions. |
| Facility or release status | Use ECSD, Barnstable, VINELink, BOP, or ICE depending on custody level. |
Essex County Jail Facilities
Middleton Jail & House of Correction is the primary secure facility for male county jail custody. The official Middleton facility page describes a medium-security jail and house of correction that holds sentenced individuals and people held pretrial from across Essex County. The Lawrence Pre-release and Re-entry Center and Women in Transition Center serve lower-security and transition roles, while Barnstable is the current official route for many Essex female inmate location questions.
The official ECSD female-inmates notice is especially important. It says Essex County female pretrial and sentenced inmates formerly held at Suffolk County House of Correction are now housed at Barnstable County Correctional Facility in Bourne. A family searching only Middleton may miss an Essex inmate because the physical custody route is in another county.

Booking at Middleton Jail
Middleton includes intake services. ECSD annual reports say Criminal Records staff admit new inmates, conduct intake screening, create booking reports, and maintain case records. The 2024 report listed 3,947 people processed through intake, including 467 safekeeps, 2,723 pretrial intakes, and 757 sentenced intakes. For Middleton specifically, ECSD listed 3,723 new male inmates processed and 176 female inmates processed.
Booking is not the same as conviction. It is the administrative jail intake that follows arrest or court commitment. Intake can include identity confirmation, property, screening, photo, classification, and case-record work. ECSD's 2023 report also noted Objective Jail Classification, which guides custody and housing decisions. A booking can exist before MassCourts shows a final docket update, and a docket can exist after the person has been released or transferred.
Essex County Visitation Rules
Visitation rules vary by facility. The official ECSD in-person visits page says Middleton visits require scheduling 48 to 24 hours in advance by calling 978-750-1900 ext. 3472 between noon and 3 p.m. Women in Transition visits also require scheduling 48 to 24 hours ahead through ext. 3728, and Salisbury outdoor visits may be canceled due to weather. Lawrence visits do not require an appointment, but first-time visitor forms for Lawrence and Salisbury must be submitted at least 24 hours before the visit.
| Facility | Appointment Rule | Contact | Key Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Middleton | Required 48 to 24 hours ahead | 978-750-1900 ext. 3472 | Call between noon and 3 p.m. |
| Women in Transition | Required 48 to 24 hours ahead | 978-750-1900 ext. 3728 | Outdoor visits may be canceled by weather. |
| Lawrence Pre-release | No appointment, first-time form required | prereleaserevisits@essexsheriffma.org | Form due at least 24 hours before visit. |
Essex County Mail and Deposits
Personal Essex inmate mail goes through Securus Digital Mail Center/Essex County, PO Box 20527, Tampa, FL 33622. The envelope must include the inmate name, ID number, and housing unit when known. Privileged legal mail is treated separately, so do not use the personal scanned-mail route for attorney mail without checking the official rule. The ECSD mail page says originals are held for 60 days before destruction, and a sender may request return with a self-addressed stamped envelope.
Deposits use the ECSD depositing-funds page route: Aramark commissary, ConnectNetwork GTL online deposits, trust phone deposits at 888-988-4768, lobby kiosks, and ConnectNetwork mobile app. Telephone Trust and Pin Debit deposits use Site ID 262. A deposit need does not prove custody. If the inmate ID is missing, use the official custody chain first.
State Federal and ICE Locators
Massachusetts state-prison custody is separate from Essex County sheriff custody. Mass.gov directs users to find an inmate in a Massachusetts prison through VINELink or phone support. VINELink is a custody-status and notification tool, not an ECSD roster replacement, and it may not show every new county booking.
Federal custody uses a different path. The BOP inmate locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present and lets users search by name or federal number. ICE ODLS uses A-number plus country of birth or name, country of birth, and date of birth. U.S. Marshals pretrial custody does not have a public detainee locator. If a person may have a federal or immigration hold, county bail payment may not lead to release.
| System | Search Inputs | Use When |
|---|---|---|
| VINELink / MA DOC | Full name or commitment number | State-prison custody after sentencing or transfer. |
| BOP | Name or Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number | Federal sentenced custody. |
| ICE ODLS | A-number and country, or name/country/DOB | Immigration detention or transfer is suspected. |
Essex County Bail Records
The official ECSD bail page gives specific local rules. All bails are done nightly at 8 p.m., and the person posting bail must arrive by 6:30 p.m. To determine a bail amount, call Records at 978-750-1900 ext. 3400. ECSD requires a cashier's check or money order payable to the Bail Clerk on duty, except that cash is accepted up to $5,000. Personal checks are not accepted. The person posting bail must be at least 18 and have valid picture ID.
A bail record is not the same as the court docket. Bail can change after arraignment, and a hold, detainer, warrant, sentence, probation matter, federal custody issue, or ICE matter can block release even if one bail is paid. For the filed charges and court events that follow custody, use Essex County court records after jail arrest.
Note: Confirm custody and facility before scheduling a visit, sending money, or relying on a bail amount.
